Quilt Guilds
Read About What They Do For You
And Your Community !

It seems every time I call AJ on the phone, she is always heading out to a quilt quild meeting, or finishing some project to bring along. She loves her guild! Just so that you know, a guild by definition “Is an association of craftsman of a particular trade” (in this case, quilters).
A consortium is almost the same thing but the group is more actively involved in a common activity or goal. Shake both of these up together you found a great quilt guild to join.

There are lots of good reasons to join a guild, other than getting out of doing the dishes (although this is really is a hard one to beat). It is a great feeling when you and others in your group have so much in common, helping each other and also helping your community. Let me explain this a little further.

What has once evolved from a quilting bee, quilt guilds have really come a long way since then. There are several elements to look for in guilds that seem to have a common thread (excuse the pun). One is getting together to socialize, that’s pretty much still the same. It is always great to make new friends and exchange patterns, tips, and the newest fabric on the table.

Over a cup of coffee and goodies, you might discuss the best quilt books or magazines that you’ve read recently, or discuss stitch tricks you just learned that you want to pass on. This Show-and-Tell is great for exchanging projects, and shows what you’ve been working so hard on. Do you know what’s great about this? Your friends will get you through the difficult steps and stitches of your project, and guide you forward with their expertise.

You won’t have to go through it alone! Someday you’ll have that expertise to help a newcomer as well.

Does that sound good so far? There’s more!

On top of this fun and productive social gathering, your group will probably set time for a business meeting to discuss fundraisers for some community organization. Many guilds focus on community service, such as providing quilts or blankets to neonatal units and cancer wards at local hospitals. Other projects could include walker and wheelchair bags for nursing homes.

Further afield, guilds send quilts to fallen soldiers and their families, or make what’s called ugly quilts (made of leftover scraps of material). The projects could be a joint quilt or individual items all to be sold for a worthwhile cause. What a great way to gain experience and to give back to others. Both will boost your confidence and make you feel great all over.

Many guilds will also do several field trips to different quilt events across the state

So you see, there is a lot more to Quilt Guilds than just sewing!

Well, I hope I gave you a few pointers on what to expect when you find the guild you like. Don’t be afraid to ask questions of its members to see what they do as a club, and what their mission statement is. Go to the one you’ve chosen for a few weeks and see if it feels right for you. If not, find another one that works. There are tons of them out there. If your still mot sure, drop AJ a line and ask her how her guild works.

What has your guild done lately?
We’d love it if you would share it with us and we’ll post the link on this page. Go ahead- tell us about it and how being a member makes you feel?

To make it easier for all, I did some research for you and picked out great site for great information on guilds and finding one close to you. Just click on this link on quilt guilds to take you there!

AJ ‘s guild has done some pretty cool stuff lately for charity. The Endless Mountain Quilt Guild is the local guild that Anna Jane belongs to. EMG is a great guild and will gives you lots of insight on what some of our favorite small town guilds are doing for projects for their community and also  for fun.  Make sure you check it out!

As always, it’s been nice talking to you
Thanks for visiting and hope to see you soon.

Linda & AJ
